Policy on Events

(Issued March 12)

In response to the rapidly evolving events surrounding COVID-19 (also called novel coronavirus), Augustana is updating its information and guidance in the following ways, which may be further updated as local and global conditions change. The latest information is available for the university community at

Postponement or Adjustment of Events

Organizations around the world have been assessing how to help prevent the spread of infection, including thorough steps they take with respect to events and travel. Many organizations have canceled major events and curtailed travel. At Augustana, we are aiming to balance two imperatives: We are seeking to continue our work of education and research to the greatest extent possible, while also keeping our community safe and protecting the health of communities beyond our campus, as well.

As we take steps that help to inhibit the spread of the virus, one such step is to reconsider and reduce the number of university events that bring together, in close proximity, large numbers of attendees. At this time, no new external or internal events will be scheduled at the university. This includes no scheduling of spaces or hosting of events for external groups or constituents.

Large-Scale, Non-Athletic Events

Augustana is canceling or postponing non-athletic events hosted by the university between Friday, March 13, and Tuesday, April 14, that involve more than 10 participants.

In cases where even small groups are gathering, we urge you to consider the following:

  • The number of people attending and the event site. Some events that are smaller, but in confined spaces, should be reconsidered. Some events may be larger, but the facilities involved may allow for sufficient social distancing of attendees, and other safeguards such as reduced attendance, personal hygiene protocols and enhanced cleaning may be possible.
  • The age and health of expected attendees, recognizing that evidence to date suggests greater impacts on vulnerable populations, including older individuals.
  • The fact that staff are required to help prepare for, service and clean up after your event.

Athletic Activities Suspended

Based on the latest developments, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) has suspended all athletic activities at this time.

All upcoming competitions between NSIC teams are suspended immediately, while NCAA national competitions were canceled earlier today (March 12). Non-conference regular season competitions involving Augustana teams already underway will be played to completion over the weekend.

Augustana Athletics will continue to monitor and evaluate the evolving situation, alongside the NSIC.

Questions or Cancelation Assistance

  • As you cancel or postpone your event(s), please tell us your plans at Staff will update events and assist with refunding registration, as needed. If attendees purchased tickets for the event, their order will be refunded to their method of payment.
  • If you believe your event of more than 100 people merits an exception with the above considerations in mind, we ask that you send a request to We will work with you to assess the risks from a public health perspective.

The university events subject to the provisions described above do not include regularly scheduled Augustana academic courses currently scheduled to resume on Monday, March 23.

Thank you for your partnership and assistance as Augustana works to confront these important issues.
