Meal Plans

All first and second year students living in college-owned housing are required to participate in a residential meal plan. Residential students in their third or fourth (or more) year must either waive the meal plan requirement or elect an approved meal plan. All prices listed in the plan details are for the 2009 - 2010 academic year.

Please visit the FAQ section of our website to get information about all of our meal plans.

Block plans provide the convenience of a pre-determined number of meals for the entire semester. Some students worry about missed meals during the week if they are on a Traditional Plan - no need to worry with a Block Plan because the number of meals in the plan are "blocked" for the entire semester. These plans also have the added flexibility of permitting friends or family to dine on your plan.
  • Augie Gold - 175 Meals + 50 Flex Dollars per semester. Cost per semester: $1,606.00 + $113.00 SD Sales Tax = $1,719.00. Students who prefer this meal plan generally eat two times per day and enjoy some weekends to spend time with their family and friends. They also enjoy the flexibility to use Flex Dollars to purchase meals at the Viking Huddle or for pizza deliver. Start out with an allotment of meals for the semester, then eat as many (or as few) meals each week as you would like - up to 175 meals for the entire semester. Plus, add the unique ability to convert any of the 175 meals per semester into Flex Dollars at a rate of $5 per meal, twice a semester (October 9th and November 18th for Fall semester, March 10th and April 16th for Spring semester). You have the option to buy additional blocks of 25 meals for $60.00 at any time (these meals can not be converted to Flex Dollars).
  • Augie Blue - 120 Meals + 300 Flex Dollars per semester. Cost per semester: $1,606.00 + $113.00 SD Sales Tax = $1,719.00. Students who prefer this meal plan generally like the flexibility to dine in multiple locations. With this plan, students can dine in the Ordal Dining Room for any meal period and have the flexibilty to grab a mid-day snack or late night dinner at the Viking Huddle or for pizza delivery using their Flex Dollars.. Start out with an allotment of meals for the semester, then eat as many (or as few) meals each week as you would like - up to 120 meals for the entire semester. Plus, add the unique ability to convert any of the 120 meals per semester into Flex Dollars at a rate of $5 per meal, twice a semester (October 9th and November 18th for Fall semester, March 10th and April 16th for Spring semester). You have the option to buy additional blocks of 25 meals for $60.00 at any time (these meals can not be converted to Flex Dollars).
Traditional meal plans are set up to give students a predetermined number of meals each week that classes are in session. Students who would like more flexibility for purchases in the Huddle and for ordering a pizza delivery may purchase Viking Bucks and receive a 15% bonus for every dollar that is put in your account.
  • The Viking - Cost per semester: $1,606.00 + $113.00 SD Sales Tax = $1,719.00. This plan consists of 14 meals per week and is ideal for the student who eats two meals a day and leave campus occasionally. This plan ensures that you have meals available to you in the dining hall every week of the semester. One meal may be used during each period of the three meal periods of the day - breakfast, lunch (or brunch on the weekends) and dinner. There are no Flex Dollars associated with this plan. Students who do not elect a plan will be enrolled in the Viking Meal Plan.

Note: The commuter meal plan listed below is only available to students living at home, in approved off-campus housing or in college-owned "theme houses." Commuter students can sign up for any of the block or traditional meal plans or for the plan below.

  • Ole Express - 60 Meals + 50 Flex Dollars per semester. Cost per semester: $744.000 + $52.00 SD Sales Tax = $796.00. This plan is only available to 3rd and 4th year student (e.g. juniors, seniors), graduate students, commuters and others not required to subscribe to a full meal plan or to live in college-owned housing. This plan allows you to eat as meals as you would like per week up to 60 meals per semester. You have the option to buy a maximum of two (2) additional blocks of 25 meals for $60.00 at any time. This plan does not permit converting block meals into Flex Dollars and is not eligible for the "Senior Dividend" or the 10% scholarship reinstatement for Commuter students.

Flex Dollars & Viking Bucks -  Flex Dollars & Viking Bucks are prepaid cash value credits that permit students to purchase meals and other food items without having to carry cash. The credits are accessible by scanning the student ID cards. Flex Dollars and Viking Bucks may be used in the Ordal Dining Room, the Viking Huddle, and to order pizza from the local Domino's.

Flex Dollars - Flex Dollars are a feature built into most meal plans. Flex Dollars do not carry over from fall to spring semesters because they are part of the meal plan for a particular academic term.

Viking Bucks - Viking Bucks spends just like Flex Dollars but is purchased separate from a meal plan. In fact, Viking Bucks can be purchased and used by anyone who has a college ID card, whether they have a meal plan or not. Card holders have the flexibility to add Viking Bucks to their accounts at any time during the academic year and receive an additional 15% in purchasing power. In other words, for every $1.00 purchased, $1.15 in food credits will be applied to the card. Viking Bucks purchases can be paid by check, cash, or credit card, as well as charged to the student's school account. Student Viking Bucks balances can be carried over from fall to spring semesters, but must be used by the end of the academic year or the cash value will be forfeited.
