Augustana College strives to assure there is accessibility to activities and programs for students with disabilities. In attempting to offer the same opportunities for all students, the college takes care not to isolate or segregate students with disabilities from others wherever integration is feasible. In providing reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities, it is Augustana's desire to offer the following:

  • alternative ways to fulfill course requirements
  • use of innovative teaching techniques
  • tailoring requirements to individual needs
  • adapting tests to assure measurement of a student's knowledge, not the disability

All identified special needs are to be supported with written verification of the disability and submitted to the Academic Resource Services Office. In addition, the student will provide the office with a specific list of needed accommodations. Staff, faculty and student together will finalize arrangements for special support services. This partnership (student, staff and faculty) create an environment that promotes equal access to learning.

Points of Clarification

  • Students with disabilities should, as early as possible, contact the Student Academic Support Services Office (274-5503) to request accommodations.
  • Augustana College requires documentation of the disability. In relation to learning disabilities, a specific assessment with recommendations within the last three years is required. Costs of such assessments are the responsibility of the student. Referrals to diagnosticians may be provided by the Student Academic Support Services Office.
  • Once documentation is received, the materials will be reviewed to clarify the nature and extent of the disability. Typically, the student, the Student Academic Support Services Director, and others as appropriate will meet to discuss what accommodations might be reasonable. If academic work is an issue, faculty may become involved in these discussions.

Augustana College is committed to offering equal access to people with disabilities. In compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), the college does not exclude otherwise qualified persons with disabilities, solely by reason of the disability, from participating in college programs and activities, nor are persons with disabilities denied the benefits of these programs or subjected to discrimination.
