American Redcross Levels 1-6

Level 1
Orientation to the water for older children who have little swim lesson experience or building on skills learned in Preschool classes.
Floating and Kicking with the aid of the teacher.
Preparation for Stroke Instruction.

Prerequisite: Child must be at least 5 years of age or has successfully completed Preschool 2.

Level 2
Independent Glides and Kicking
Introduction to Combined Strokes, and Rhythmic Breathing

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 1 or Independent floats (back and front, 3 sec.), submersion, kicking, and arm motions.

Level 3
Combined strokes are improved and refined
Introduction to: Elementary Backstroke, Diving, Treading Water, Rescue Breathing, Butterfly
Life Jacket Survival Skills

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 2 or ability to glide independently and swim on front and back (5 yards)

Level 4
Increased Competency of Strokes
Emphasis on Safety Skills
Introduction to: Breaststroke, Sidestroke, and Turns at the Wall.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 3 or ability to kick across the width of the pool, swim front crawl with rhythmic breathing (15 yards), back crawl (15 yards), demonstrate whip kick, butterfly kick, and tread water (30 seconds).

Level 5
Continued Refinement of: Front Crawl Stroke, Back Crawl Stroke, Elementary Back Stroke, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Butterfly
Introduction to: Surface Dives, survival swimming, and turns.

Prerequisite:Successful completion of Level 4 or proficiency of front and back crawl (25 yard endurance), demonstrated coordination of treading water (2 min.), breaststroke (15 yards), sidestroke, and Butterfly (15 yards)

Level 6

Fitness Swimmer
Refine Strokes and increase endurance
Use of training equipment and principles of water exercise and fitness

Personal Safety
Refine strokes and increase endurance
prevention of aquatic emergencies and self rescue techniques

Lifeguard Readiness
Refine strokes and increase endurance
Introduce skills required for successful completion of the American Red Cross lifeguard training course

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Level 5 or skillful demonstration of the following strokes and distances: front crawl (50 yards), back crawl (50 yards), elementary backstroke (25 yards), breaststroke (25 yards), sidestroke (25 yards), and butterfly (25 yards).
