Fire Safety

Candles and Incense
Burning candles, incense, or other open flames is prohibited in college housing.

Cooking Appliances
Appliances with exposed heating elements are not permitted in residence hall rooms.

Extension Cords
Extension cords with multiple plug-ins and cords under rugs are not permitted. Overloaded outlets and household extension cords create excessive heat in wiring that poses a fire hazard.

Fire Safety and Fireworks
Fire safety devices and equipment shall not be tampered with to include willfully setting off a false alarm. Tampering with fire safety equipment and the use of fireworks is a violation of state and city fire codes and will be referred to local law enforcement agencies. Violations may result in a fine not exceeding $1000 and/or imprisonment up to one (1) year.

Fire Alarm
In case of a fire calll 9-911. Be sure to state your name, the name of the residence hall or building, and the building's location. Do not assume someone else has called the fire department. Notify a Residence Life staff member immediately if you are in a residence hall or a Building Manager if you are in one of the other buildings. If the fire is small, attempt to extinguish it with one of the extinguishers on the floor. Isolate the fire by shutting the nearby doors.

Fireplaces
Fireplaces in Solberg, Bergsaker, and Tuve may be used under the supervision of the Residence Life staff.

Hair Dryers
Hair dryers and curling irons must be unplugged when not in use.

Halogen Lamps
Halogen lamps with 500 watt bulbs or larger are prohibited.

Space Heaters
Space Heaters are prohibited.
