Each Girls on the Run season is 12 weeks - the fall season begins at the end of September and runs through the beginning of December / the spring season begins at the end of February and runs through the beginning of May
Girls on the Run summer camp is one full work week, 4 hours each day (either 8am-noon or 1-5pm)
Girls on the Run is a twice weekly program, running an hour and fifteen minutes (most programs are Tuesdays/Thursdays). Most schools begin their program right after school, which means a start time of anywhere between 2:50 and 3:30. Coaches will need to arrive 10 minutes early to greet the girls and should stay until all of the girls are picked up or have left for home.
Each site will celebrate the end of the season with a banquet. All of the Girls on the Run participants and their families are invited to attend. Coaches are encouraged to attend.
Each May, all of the girls that have participated in the fall, summer and spring seasons can participate in the Girls on the Run 5K! Coaches are encouraged to attend, to run with the girls, or to cheer them on!
There are always 2 coaches present for each session. Between the two of you, you might designate one coach to do the lesson every session, or you may decide to split the lessons between the two of you. The curriculum is scripted, which means if you do not feel comfortable speaking in front of your group of 15 girls, you can “read” the lesson. There is always a “getting on board” portion in the beginning to introduce the lesson, then a game or two to reinforce the lesson and we end with the workout portion - this lasts 30 + minutes and is the running portion of the lesson. If you are strictly an assistant coach, you are responsible for making sure the girls are paying attention, participating in the lessons, games and workouts and being a cheerleader for them - encouraging them, especially when they are running!
Stacy Stahl, Girls on the Run Council Director, will need you to fill out an application and a background check will need to be performed. Please make it very clear which days of the week you are available and what time you are available to start each day. If you have a region of Sioux Falls you would prefer, all of this is important when placing you at a school site. If you have a specific school request, please let Stacy know right away.
All coaches will need to attend a one day training - there are several options available - training is scheduled about a month to three weeks before the season begins.
Throughout the duration of the season you are coaching, you are welcome to use the downtown YWCA fitness facilities at no cost
Free Girls on the Run t-shirt and water bottle
Most importantly - making a difference in the lives of young girls!
