Social Conflict and Reconciliation in Ireland

2000 UMAIE January Term Abroad

Days Events:

Today we toured County Wicklow by bus.  It was very wet today, but nonetheless an interesting day in the Wicklow Mountains south of Dublin.  Our first stop was at the Glencree Reconciliation Centre.  This Centre is housed in a renovated former British Army barracks.  It
was originally built in the late 1790s to give the British military an outpost in the mountains where many of the rebels of the 1798 rebellion were hiding.  It is very fitting that this structure now be used for peace building.  (Bill Swart)
Welcome dry spells helped make our visit to Glendalough less frigid than last year. This is a beautiful part of Ireland. Glendalough is a 6th century monastic site, founded by St. Kevin, with a well preserved church and round tower. It was a very important center for the spread of early
christianity throughout western Europe. We hope you enjoy the pictures from Glencree and Glendalough. (Check out additional links below.)
