Social Conflict and Reconciliation in Ireland

2000 UMAIE January Term Abroad

Days Events:

We arrived safely in Belfast yesterday afternoon, and embarked on a tour of the National and Loyalist neighborhoods this morning.  The tour was especially interesting becuase it focused on the variety of murals that are painted on buildings in each area this morning . . .(See additional links below.)
(Bill Swart)
After a short lunch break, we met with Republican ex-paramilitary prisoners.  This classroom session allowed our guests to tell their stories as a way to help us understand what life in the Nationalist areas of Belfast is like.  They also focused on their prison experience as well as the problems they encountered after their release.  All in all, it made for an interesting afternoon.
