Social Conflict and Reconciliation in Ireland

2000 UMAIE January Term Abroad

Days Events:

We are off to Londonderry today.  The name of this town is particularly problematic, as the Loyalist like to call it Londonderry, and the nationalists insist on referring to it in its original Irish form, Derry (Doire). Derry has been the site of much political violence during the 'Troubles' including 'Bloody Sunday' when British troops opened fire on a peaceful civil rights demonstration killing fourteen  (30 January 1972).

After a brief driving tour of the city, our host and friend, Jon McCourt took us on a walking tour of the city, including the Bogside neighborhood and the cemetary where many republican paramilitaries (and inocent civilians) are buried.  It was a very interesting yet emotional afternoon.
