Viking Flex Pledge Update - June 15
The Augustana campus has begun to reopen and will continue to do so in phases throughout the summer. This intentional phased approach is allowing the University, along with our medical advisors, to test procedures and health and safety protocols to best prepare us to serve the entire AU community this fall. The first phase included a small number of faculty, staff, and coaches, as well as students engaged in summer research and student athletes returning for workouts. The admission staff will begin hosting individual visits by appointment on June 22.
As we navigate this gradual return to an open campus, it is important to share that the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff are of primary concern. Augustana is working with state and local health officials and following the guidance of national and international health organizations to create policies and procedures designed to decrease risk of transmission. Numerous modifications have been and continue to be implemented — including the reconfiguration of classrooms, physical distancing markers, air quality controls, frequent sanitization, decreased capacity in the residence halls, and health education efforts. Additionally, mask usage is being highly encouraged, and will be required in specific locations on campus, especially when physical distancing is difficult.
The best health protocols will be effective only if we all take responsibility for the health and well-being of our campus community. With that in mind, we have developed the Viking Flex Health & Safety Pledge to which we will ask you to commit faithfully as you live, learn and study on campus. Instructions on how to sign the pledge within the portal will be sent later this week.
Finally, there are a number of important updates to share with you on the following topics:
- Housing. Augustana is prepared to welcome students into campus housing in August. Modest reductions in overall capacity will promote physical distancing and support important health and safety protocols. Look for updates from the Campus Life team soon. If you requested a roommate, our plan is to match you with one. Single rooms will be assigned based on individual accommodation needs and availability.
- Move-In. Move-in dates for first-year students are August 21 and 22. Returning students may move in on August 23, 24, or 25. Students and families will be able to schedule a specific move-in date and time to allow for appropriate physical distancing. Detailed information will be sent to students soon.
- Dining. The Sub Connection, Viking Grill, Starbucks @Siverson, and the Ordal Dining Room will continue to provide full service, including a new meals-to-go option. Modified operations will include physical distancing protocols and one-way traffic lines.
- Fall classes. Almost all classes will be delivered in a face-to-face and/or hybrid format, with physical distancing, classroom mask requirements, sanitizing between classes, and other safety procedures established to limit the risk of transmission.
A limited number of courses have moved exclusively online. The Registrar’s Office will be in communication with returning students whose course delivery method has changed to determine if schedule changes are desired.
