What specialty tracks are available?
There are two tracks available: the dult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AG-ACNP) and the adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist (AG-CNS). The AG-ACNP specialized in caring for patients ages 13 and older with complex acute and chronic medical conditions in the inpatient health care setting.The AG-CNS is a clinical practice expert, an educator, researcher andconsultant who influences the three spheres of practice: patient care, nursing and systems.
Is a post-master's certificate option available?
A post-master's certificate is available in both our adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner and adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist tracks starting Summer 2023.
Is the program online?
The program is delivered online (synchronous and asynchronous). Three intensive immersion sessions will occur on campus in Sioux Falls during the second year of the program.
How long does the program take to complete?
The MSN program takes two years to complete. The post-master’s certificates take one year to complete.
How do I apply?

Do I need to take a statistics course?
Statistics is not a prerequisite to the MSN program.

How much nursing experience do I need to have? What kind of nursing experience do I need?
The adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AG-ACNP) track requires two years of clinical experience in an acute care setting; critical care experience is preferred. The adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist (AG-CNS) track requires two years of clinical experience.
Can I earn clinical hours for work that I am doing in my current job?
No, clinical hours towards the MSN degree must be completed separately from your current employment hours.
What if I can’t decide which program to complete? Do I need to decide before I enter the program?
Students can begin the program without selecting a specialty track. Students must choose their track by the beginning of the spring semester in their first year to allow time to plan for clinical placements.
How will I find preceptors for my clinical experiences?
The faculty in the MSN program will assist you with this process working with each student individually depending upon their chosen specialty track and focus area.
