Data science is a rapidly growing field with amazing career opportunities!
The discipline of data science lies at the intersection of mathematics, statistics and computer science, and has become an in-demand skill set in today’s data-driven society.
Data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from data in various forms, both structured and unstructured.
The technical courses provide the tools to work with data and create models while the domain knowledge courses help one understand what it is they are looking at — the meaning in the data. The data scientist also needs to be a good communicator. Technical experts that are able to communicate their results to multiple audiences in both written and oral forms are in high demand in today’s work environment.
Augustana’s liberal arts environment provides an excellent opportunity to combine the technical field of data science with other fields of study in the natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities. The data science major has been designed with the application domain in mind.
Why study data science?
In Glassdoor’s 2019 rankings, data scientist holds the No. 1 spot for the best job in America — making this the fourth consecutive year in this position. The demand for data scientists is anticipated to be high for years to come.
In their October 2012 article published in the Harvard Business Review, Thomas H. Davenport and D.J. Patil wrote, “…the dominant trait among data scientists is an intense curiosity — a desire to go beneath the surface of a problem, find the questions at its heart, and distill them into a very clear set of hypotheses that can be tested. This often entails the associative thinking that characterizes the most creative scientists in any field.”
Our professors identify curiosity as a celebrated trait of Augustana students as they challenge them to think creatively, work collaboratively and communicate effectively.
The skills you will develop through the Augustana Core Curriculum, combined with the courses within the major, will equip you to tackle the complex problems you will face in this profession. The ability to interpret data in strategic, analytical and ethical ways will be key to your success.
