Digital Exhibit — Jim Savage: Preserving Our Western Heritage in Wood

Jim Savage — Digital Exhibit

Woodcarving and American folk art have always gone hand in hand. Within these traditions, Sioux Falls artist James "Jim" Elwood Savage (1932-86) carved his own place to preserve America’s western heritage. The history of the Northern Plains fascinated the artist. Because of his enthusiasm for his subjects and his knowledge of the materials, each of Savage’s works has a character and personality of its own. Savage said, “Native Americans, mountain men and pioneers have so much realism, and they are something that I understand and imagine best.”

The images in this online exhibit are from the Shirley Savage Jones Collection and the Center for Western Studies' own collection.
