In partnership with All Souls Church, Unitarian Universalist, Sioux Falls, the Center for Western Studies is sponsoring a series of events to honor Native American Day. Responding to an expressed need in the community, All Souls Church has organized a series of events leading up to and following Native American Day, October 14, 2013. Spirit of Peace United Church of Christ is also sponsoring the series. Financial support is provided by the South Dakota Humanities Council, South Dakota Arts Council, Unitarian Universalist Association, and CWS. The public is invited to attend as many events as possible.
October 6 (2-4 p.m.): Artist’s Talk and Reception for a commissioned piece of art by Jerry Fogg entitled Past, Present and Future. All Souls UU Church, 2222 South Cliff Avenue.
October 12 (3-5 p.m.): Dallas Chief Eagle will present Healing the Sacred Hoop, a dance-with-drum performance and discussion of the necessity of healing. Spirit of Peace UCC Church, 69th Street and Cliff Avenue.
October 12 (7-9 p.m.): Doctrine of Discovery Symposium, with Frank Pommersheim, USD Law Professor, Dallas Chief Eagle, artist and educator, and Charon Asetoyer, CEO Native American Women’s Health and Education Resource Center. Spirit of Peace UCC Church, 69th and Cliff Avenue.
October 27 (2-4 p.m.): Author Joseph Marshall III will discuss his book The Lakota Way at Kresge Auditorium, Humanities Center, Augustana College.
