Learn to Swim Policies & Procedures

Procedures

Check in at the Elmen Center equipment desk before the first lesson. Regardless of payment status, check in to complete paperwork and get some information.

  • Deposits of $30 are only refundable with a doctor's note.
  • Regular attendance of lessons is encouraged as LTS is not able to offer make-up lessons.
  • Class sizes are limited so register as soon as possible.
  • The LTS computer program will allow parents to register a child for one class per level in each session (the program will allow a person to register for multiple levels in the same session.) To be placed on additional wait lists, contact LTS.
  • Parents are able to register for lessons at any time, but LTS advises that they wait until they know whether or not their child will complete their current level. If the parent is unsure, they should ask their child's instructor.
  • Water assistants are on hand to help students get to and from the pool.
  • Family locker rooms are available for mothers who need to assist sons and fathers who need to assist daughters.
  • Parents can watch lessons from behind the large observation windows on the first and second floor in the Elmen Center or from the pool viewing deck located inside the pool area on the second floor. Water is available on the 2nd-floor viewing area. Parents are not allowed on the deck during swimming lessons for liability reasons.
  • Halfway reports will be given to each child after the fourth lesson.
  • Classes will be tested during the seventh and/or eighth lessons.
  • Children should not leave valuables unsupervised.
  • LTS does not offer swim tests to determine what level a swimmer should be in. LTS is willing to talk with parents to help determine their swimmer's level.

Pool Policies

If a swimmer should get sick or have an accident in the pool, LTS will cover safety issues as needed during the regular class time. LTS will also announce plans regarding makeup lessons if there is a need for them. In the event of diarrhea in the pool, it must close for a minimum of eight hours to super chlorinate and disinfect. In the event of vomit or solid stool in the pool, it must close for a minimum of 20 minutes.

  • Goggles that cover the eyes are fine, but not required. Please no snorkel masks that cover the nose.
  • For the safety of others, children who are not toilet trained must wear swim diapers.

Weather Information

Thunderstorms — Lessons continue as usual. The pool is grounded and lightning does not affect it.

Tornado Watch — Parents will be notified of the situation, but lessons will continue. Parents can decide if they want to stay or go.

Tornado Warning — If sirens indicate a tornado in the area, the pool will be evacuated and children will retreat to our locker rooms where they will remain until the warning ends. Parents are encouraged to stay with LTS until an "all clear" is given. A decision about whether to have make-up lessons (and when they will be) will be made by the Learn To Swim director and announced as soon as possible.

Winter Weather — LTS operates on the same calendar as the rest of the Augustana campus. Lessons will not be canceled due to weather unless Augustana closes campus and cancels other events (i.e. basketball games, concerts, etc.). LTS understands that some of our swimmers come from out of town and these travel situations may be different from those who live in town. If a child is unable to get to lessons safely, stay home and contact LTS so the instructor is aware.
