Viking Vocabulary

Berserk: An ancient Scandinavian warrior frenzied in battle and held to be invulnerable. Also one whose actions are recklessly defiant. At Augustana, a member of our football defensive line is sometimes known as "a berserk."

Edda: A collection of Old Norse poems, called the Elder or Poetic Edda, assembled in the early 13th century. Also the name of Augustana’s yearbook.

Odin: The Norse god of wisdom, war, art culture, and the supreme deity and creator of the cosmos and humans.

Ole: Patron saint of Augustana, who lives between the library and the Edith Mortensen Center.

Skol: A Scandinavian toast to someone’s health. Also the best club on campus.

Valhalla: Norse mythology equivalent of heaven. Also a theme house at Augustana.

Valkyrie: Any of the beautiful maidens attendant upon Odin who bring the souls of slain warriors chosen by Odin to Valhalla and there wait upon them.

Viking: One of a seafaring Scandinavian people who raided the coasts of northern and western Europe from the eighth through the tenth century. Also Augustana’s athletic team name.

Voyage: The events of a journey of exploration or discovery. In other words, WHAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING!
