Faculty Positions

The faculty are those who have been granted status as faculty members by the Board of Trustees upon recommendation of the President. The faculty shall consist of teachers with the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, or Instructor, and any other designated by the President.

Title: Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish
Position Type: Full-Time
Department: Modern Foreign Languages

Augustana University invites applications for a 9-month, full-time, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages beginning in August 2017. Pending administrative approval, this position may turn into a full-time, tenure-track position for which the successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply.

Augustana University is an institution committed to innovation and high academic standards, combining a long-standing tradition of quality with new educational concepts. The Department of Modern Foreign Languages reflects this approach to higher education, incorporating courses that integrate the latest in foreign language acquisition with professional training opportunities.

Responsibilities: The successful applicant will teach three courses per semester and one course in a January interim.

Qualifications: Earned doctoral degree in Spanish, Hispanic Studies, Latin American Studies or Comparative Literature by September 2017; active scholarly agenda involving the literature of any area of Latin America; native/near-native proficiency in Spanish and English; ability to teach all levels of Spanish as well as topics and survey courses in literature and culture; evidence of effective college/university undergraduate level teaching including the teaching of Spanish; willingness to serve the campus and broader research community in the context of a private, church-related, liberal arts university.

Title: Assistant Director of Bands and Music Education
Position Type: Full-Time
Department: Music

Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is seeking a candidate for Assistant Director of Bands and Music Education for teaching in the Music Department beginning Fall 2017.

Augustana is a selective, residential, undergraduate institution of over 1650 full-time students recognized for the excellence of its graduates and for its experienced, creative faculty. The community of Sioux Falls (metro area of 250,000) is growing, vibrant and reflects an increasing diverse demographic along with a healthy business community and an active and progressive art scene, which includes the renovated $32 million Washington Pavilion of Arts and Sciences, South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, SculptureWalk, Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society and the Visual Art Center. The Augustana Music Department is a member of NASM and offers liberal arts degrees in music, music education, and sacred music.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate for this position will direct the Augustana Blue and Gold Band, direct two athletic pep-bands (football and basketball), teach in the area of Music Education as well as oversee the instrumental music education program and student teaching. Dependent upon the qualifications and expertise of the applicant and the needs of the Department and University, additional responsibilities may include: Jazz Ensemble (Northlanders) coordinate and facilitate the Annual Jazz on the Upper Great Plains Jazz Festival, coach combo and improvisation classes, instruction (woodwind or brass) and academic courses as needed.

Qualifications: Candidates should possess a P.H.D. in Music Education or D.M.A. in Instrumental Conducting and have demonstrated success in teaching and leading significant instrumental ensembles at the collegiate level and or public school experience.

Title: Instructor
Position Type: Part-Time
Department: Mathematics

Augustana University invites applications for a part-time, non-tenure track Instructor position in Mathematics beginning August, 2016.

Responsibilities: The successful applicant for this position may teach either Quantitative Reasoning or a course in the calculus sequence. Schedule is flexible, with several class times possible. 

Qualifications: The successful candidate must have completed the requirements for the Master’s degree in mathematics or a related field. Applicants are expected to have a passion for teaching.

Salary:  Competitive; dependent upon qualifications.

Title: Assistant or Associate Professor
Position Type: Full-Time
Department: Nursing

The Augustana University Nursing Department invites applications for tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor. A doctoral degree is required and the PhD in nursing or a DNP in a clinical specialty. If the doctoral degree is in a related field, the applicant must have a graduate degree in a nursing clinical specialty. Expertise in adult/gero and/or child health desired. Expertise in genetics and genomics a plus.

Responsibilities: Successful applicants will demonstrate strong commitment to teaching excellence in a liberal arts environment and may have opportunity to shape a new graduate program. Teaching responsibilities in didactic, clinical, and simulation laboratory required. Courses to be taught are dependent on specialization and interests of the successful applicant.

Augustana’s progressive undergraduate nursing program is recognized for the excellence of its graduates and for its experienced, creative, and engaging faculty. The Department of Nursing has both a traditional baccalaureate program and an accelerated curriculum for students with BA/BS degrees. Planning for graduate education and a genetic nursing certificate are also in the planning process. Opportunities exist for international study and exchange opportunities for students and faculty. The Nursing Department celebrates 75 years of excellence in nursing education. The nursing program has had a first-time NCLEX pass rate of 95-100% for several years. 

Qualifications: Earned doctoral degree preferred, evidence of teaching excellence and scholarly productivity.

Title: Assistant Professor of Neurobiology
Position Type: Full-Time
Department: Biology

Augsutana University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology beginning September 2017. A Ph.D. is expected; postdoctoral experience is preferred. 

Expectations: The successful candidate will join a well-rounded Biology Department that seeks to expand its programs and add an interdisciplinary neurobiology emphasis/minor to its offerings. Teaching duties normally include 2 lecture courses with labs each semester. These will include team-taught introductory biology courses and an advanced course within the candidate’s specialty.  Service to the university, including student advising, mentoring of undergraduates, and participation on faculty committees are important expectations of this position.

Research Expectations: While teaching is a major component of the position, productive research involving undergraduates is expected and is a long-standing tradition in the department. Augustana just completed a $35,000,000 renovation/addition to its science center to support both teaching and research.  The university is situated in an area experiencing rapid growth in biomedical, biotech, agricultural, and environmental research, offering collaboration opportunities in various research areas (for more information go to http://www.augie.edu/academics/biology). A research startup will be provided as well as access to extensive existing research equipment ($1,200,000 in new purchases in department over last decade).
