Cost and Scholarship Information
Augustana's comprehensive cost for tuition, room, and meals can be very affordable, ranking as one of the top four colleges for value in the Midwest.
International students benefit from Sioux Falls, South Dakota's low cost of living. At the same time, the city of 176,900 offers many opportunities and advantages to international students. Sioux Falls has access to internships, safety, a wealth of entertainment options, air travel, and a true look at "real" American life and culture. With an average class size of 20 and a student-to-professor ratio of 11:1, international students receive personal attention and advising from professors, staff, and the international office. A rigorous, nationally recognized academic environment and a 99 percent job-placement rate present added value for international students.
The 2019-2020 cost structure is as follows:
Double Room: $3,778
Meal Plan (including taxes): $4,600
Health Insurance (estimated): $1,750
Books (estimated): $1,000
Total for 2019-2020 school year: $45,613
Financial assistance is available to international students at Augustana. Scholarships and grants can cover as much as 45 percent of the comprehensive cost, depending upon academic ability and/or financial need. To apply for admission and financial assistance, students should submit an Application for Admission and Scholarships and a Financial Ability Form.
To get a feel for what you might be qualified for academically, check out the chart below for examples of initial scholarship based on: ACT composite score/SAT composite score (New SAT: Reading/Writing + Math), and Cumulative High School GPA (on a 4.0 scale). Augustana also awards scholarships based on leadership, service, talent, and other factors. Financial need scholarships for international students provide even more support beyond your academic reward. The sum of all scholarships is combined into an accepted student's Global Leaders Scholarship.
U.S. immigration regulations require international students to provide proof of sufficient funding (the difference between the total costs of attendance and any scholarship support received from Augustana) for one year of study before Augustana can issue an I-20 immigration document. An I-20 is necessary in applying for a US student visa. It may be helpful to note that the average total scholarship (academic plus financial need) for incoming international first year students for Fall 2017 was $18,500. The average remaining cost of $24,500 was sufficiently covered by the students' own financial resources. Usually, families provide a bank statement or other financial documents showing access to the remaining amount. If a student has a sponsor apart from his or her family, additional bank statements and letters of support from sponsors can be submitted to Augustana. Augustana's modest endowment size means that we cannot guarantee each student's full financial need will be met, but we will try our best to support students who prove that they can financially meet us half way.
Generally speaking, students make two payments to Augustana each year. The first payment is due by August 15 for Fall Semester and the second payment is due by January 15 for Spring Semester. If it is more convenient, international students may also set up a 3-payment-plan each semester (.pdf file).
A limited number of on-campus jobs are available for international students to earn spending money and gain work experience. International students are limited to on-campus work during the first year of study according to U.S. immigration regulations. During a student's second, third, and fourth year, off-campus employment can be approved as long as the job is related to the student's major area. Augustana students have excellent access to paid internships and jobs in the diverse and quickly-growing economy in Sioux Falls where unemployment currently hovers near 2 percent, the lowest in the nation.
