This 2024 Augustana Senior Show presents an eclectic array of art spanning various mediums, including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. The seven graduating artists have explored the unique possibilities of art and design — drawing inspiration from their interdisciplinary studies, life experiences and personal interests. Each artist brings their distinct voice and perspective. Themes from their work include African culture and athletics, as well as history and highlights of their personal growth, resilience and cultural exploration. The AU Senior Show not only celebrates their artistic achievements, but underscores the profound impact of art on individuals — reflecting the dynamic spirit of the Augustana art community.

This year’s cohort is a mix of Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) candidates, who were accepted into the 78-credit professional studio degree track, and artists who combined a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in studio art with a second major.

Gracie Korstjens ’24, an art and biology double major, is a printmaker who explored themes of identity through the lens of biological intersections, high art and hand crafts. Korstjens has been accepted into graduate school for a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in printmaking in Boston, Massachusetts, where she will continue to blend her interest in the intersections of art, science and identity.

“I am heavily inspired by the existence of organisms outside of humans, and how their lives have the potential to relate to our own,” noted Korstjens (Gracie Korstjens, “Repair/Disrepair,” screenprint, collage, dissecting tools, 2023 pictured right). “I also find the organization of the natural world incredibly beautiful.”

Benita Manzengo ’24, an art and government & international affairs double major from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, wanted to keep the African continent at the forefront of conversations.

“I am exploring my African identity, but also reclaiming it, too,” said Manzengo (Benita Manzengo, “I am (No. 1),” digital photograph, 2024 pictured above). “(Along the way), I found a sense of belonging, comfort and stability in Augustana’s art department.”

Haley Hoffer

Finding empathetic support within the art department has also been important to Haley Hoffer ’24, a BFA in sculpture student. This support has translated into what she wants her artwork to do.

“When someone views my artwork, I'd like for them to understand that everyone can create and heal through creation, no matter their past or struggles,” Hoffer stated (Haley Hoffer, “Pointless,” wood, 2022 pictured right). “I want them to recognize that vulnerability, authenticity and emotional expression are not signs of weakness, but rather demonstrations of courage and strength.”

“Our graduating seniors chose to pursue a college degree during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic,” noted Augustana Art Department Chair and Associate Professor of Art Anna Reich, who has watched this cohort grow throughout their time at AU. “Their continued adaptability and perseverance have been remarkable to observe and their commitment to their art education has been inspiring.

“What strikes me most is the way they gained confidence and learned to take themselves and their work more seriously and to trust themselves.”
