All parade entrants are asked to observe the Parade Guidelines listed below. Any violation of these guidelines will result in forfeiture of participation in the parade. Entry fees will NOT be refunded for any reason, including inclement weather.
- To secure a spot in the parade, all entrants must email the Viking Days Parade Committee at vikingdays@ole.augie.edu by the designated deadline.
- All entries must be approved by the Viking Days Parade co-chairs and advisor. Any entries not consistent with AU’s core values may be denied. Entries will be reviewed and approved on a rolling basis.
- Any entry that arrives at the parade with a presentation other than the description in the email to the parade committee may be removed from the parade.
- The Viking Days Committee reserves the right to space all parade entries according to its discretion.
- No alcoholic beverages will be allowed in or on any entry vehicle. No consumption of alcoholic beverages by parade participants will be allowed before or during the parade.
- Augustana University is a tobacco-free, smoke-free and vapor-free campus.
- Augustana University is a drug-free school zone. The Drug-Free Schools and Community Act prohibits the possession and use of marijuana (even with a prescription) on campus.
- Entries may not display advertisements (banners, logos, etc.) for alcohol, tobacco, vapor products or marijuana.
- Entries must not convey any vulgar or inappropriate material.
- In respect to those with allergies, please do not use latex balloons.
- Lyrical music, if played, should be family friendly or a radio edit.
- All parade participants must comply with current traffic laws and regulations. For everyone’s safety, we ask all motorized vehicles to refrain from excessive acceleration, wheelies, burnouts, etc.
- Semi-trucks, tractors or anything that creates noise, fumes or interrupts the constant forward motion of the parade are not allowed in the parade.
- Drivers of all units must have a valid driver’s license and insurance, and all doors to vehicles must remain closed during the parade.
- All vehicles must have an identifiable sign of their organization on BOTH sides of the vehicle.
- Items being handed out by parade participants may not be thrown from the float or vehicle, but may be distributed by associated walkers.
- There shall not be deposited any material on the streets that will cause damage to the street surface, curbs and gutters, sidewalks or any other public and private property within the right-of-ways (City of Sioux Falls Street & Engineering Division Rule).
- For safety reasons, any entry with children must have an adult on the entry to supervise.
- All entries with animals must be approved in advance and provide cleanup of animal waste immediately behind the entry.
- Political entries must meet the following guidelines:
- Candidates running for statewide office (governor, congressperson, etc.) may have their own parade unit if the candidate is present. If the candidate is not present or is a non-statewide candidate, representatives must participate with the corresponding student organization.
- Augustana University alumni may have their own unit.
- No individual entries that pertain to specific ballot measures will be accepted.
- Only paid and registered entrants will be allowed to participate on parade day.
- The parade line-up will start at 9 a.m. To facilitate a smooth parade route transition, all units must be in place by 10 a.m. After 10 a.m., your spot in the parade will be forfeited, and you may not be allowed to participate in the parade.
- The parade will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m.
Please note: The Viking Days Committee reserves the right to bar entries from the parade AT ANY TIME, including any entry not conforming to the rules and guidelines, or refusing to follow instructions of police, Campus Safety or parade officials. SAFETY IS OUR #1 CONCERN!
