Why international studies?

This interdisciplinary, secondary major is for those who believe the world is their classroom and wish to dive into interpersonal and intercultural relations.

  • Faculty from languages, literatures & cultures, government & international affairs, English, history, theatre, anthropology and religion anchor this program of study.
  • Courses explore regions and cultures outside the United States and the effects of globalization to prepare students for global leadership roles.
  • This major is perfect for those interested in working for the Peace Corps, U.S. intelligence agencies, international organizations, multinational corporations, non-governmental foundations or religious organizations with international programs.

In their nearly month-long trip, Augustana University students learned how food security, education, health systems and policies impact the welfare, decision-making and resiliency of the people in Kenya. They did so by immersing themselves in the local communities they visited. And, in turn, they made authentic connections.

Careers

Graduates can secure careers as international relations specialists, foreign service officers, diplomats, directors of international communication/PR, humanitarian relief workers and international lawyers.

Hands-On Learning  

Students work on issues important to them and cultivate contacts that often turn into full-time jobs.

Internship opportunities include:

Studying away in any approved program of choice (10 credits total) is a requirement for this major.

International studies students study away in:

Courses & Organizations

The major consists of introductory history and government courses, a language requirement, study-away program and concentration area. International studies complements other majors and is only eligible as a secondary area of study.

Students can choose to concentrate in these areas:

  • Latin American studies
  • European studies
  • Norwegian studies
  • International strategic communication & business leadership
  • Any personalized, approved concentration

International studies students often participate in:
