Interdisciplinary Studies

Why interdisciplinary studies?

The interdisciplinary studies major offers students the option of designing — in consultation with an advisor — a program uniquely suited to their educational objectives.

  • Students’ interests are uniquely matched to a one-of-a-kind major that will help them pursue their career goals in any area.
  • Students interested in exploring the possibilities of this major should consult with the Registrar's Office.

Beyond AU

With years of experience working in various marketing departments, Tanna (Van Essen) Soukup ‘16, developed a lot of pro tips when it comes to marketing. What began as a side gig for the interdisciplinary studies major quickly turned into Strategie, LLC.

Based in Sioux Falls, Strategie "helps businesses implement a marketing strategy that works cohesively with the goals of generating revenue, growing a customer base and nurturing customer loyalty."

In their nearly month-long trip, Augustana University students learned how food security, education, health systems and policies impact the welfare, decision-making and resiliency of the people in Kenya. They did so by immersing themselves in the local communities they visited. And, in turn, they made authentic connections.

Augustana University alumna Julia Berg ‘88, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, worked at the National Weather Service (NWS) in South Dakota and Nebraska for nearly 35 years. A long career, which Berg said she owed in part to Augustana.

Careers

An interdisciplinary major prepares students to work in every industry and sector. Given the broad skills learned, they are prepared to move fluidly within the labor market and equipped for innumerable career paths.

Career opportunities include becoming an attorney, research associate, college professor, cultural educator or advocate, non-profit administrator or policy analyst.

Hands-On Learning

Internship opportunities include signature experiences related to the students’ chosen departments. Since students of this major often have interest in more than one area, they often participate in multiple hands-on learning opportunities.

Interdisciplinary students study away with AU faculty-led courses in their areas of interest or semester programs led by affiliate programs.
