What jobs can you get with an accounting degree?
With a Bachelor of Arts in accounting degree, graduates often pursue jobs in public accounting — usually obtaining certified public accountant (CPA) designation. As a CPA, they have the ability to become an auditor, tax accountant, forensic accountant or consultant. Graduates can also pursue private accounting, where they work in roles such as the main accountant working their way up to CFO, tax advisor or internal auditor.
Graduates can also pursue work in governmental accounting — working for the federal, state or local government. Others will dive into the trust industry — helping families and businesses plan for the future.
Is accounting a good career choice?
Yes. Accounting is a good career for students interested in the numbers and data of a business. Accountants have successful careers in many different types of organizations — from corporate and nonprofit to government entities. They can specialize in audit, tax, forensics or consulting, while also growing into leadership roles.
How hard is an accounting degree?
Accounting is often considered more challenging than other business-related majors because accounting is the language of business. Accounting can be like learning a new language that is spoken through numbers. There are complex financial and tax rules that must be learned and followed — often creating additional challenges.
Do you need a CPA to work in accounting?
No. Not all accounting positions require a certified public accountant (CPA) designation. Positions in private accounting do not always require a CPA. However, a CPA designation helps achieve higher paid positions, like a controller or CFO. Most positions in public accounting require the CPA designation early in the career, and managers or partners of public accounting firms are usually required to have a CPA designation.
The CPA designation is considered the gold standard in the accounting industry. Augustana University accounting graduates who have taken the CPA exam have repeatedly achieved the highest pass rate in South Dakota, according to data released by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA).
Is accounting a stable career?
Yes. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of accountants and auditors is projected to grow five percent from 2024 to 2034 — faster than the average for all occupations. Over the next decade, more than 124,000 openings for accountants and auditors are projected on average each year.
The need for accountants will continue. A trusted accountant as an advisor is valuable to businesses and individuals.
