FAFSA Verification

FAFSA Verification is a process that helps confirm the accuracy of the data you reported on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Once applications are chosen through the FAFSA process, Augustana University is required to request additional information about certain items. These verified items can include income, family size, citizenship and dependency status. The Department of Education also requires schools to verify any conflicting information that comes up in the review of a student's financial aid file. Your information may be verified before and/or after you receive a financial aid offer. 

If your FAFSA is chosen to be verified, you will be contacted regarding the information that needs verifying. 

Corrections

Augustana University may make corrections to the FAFSA as a result of the verification process. If you have been asked to provide information for verification, please do not make any further corrections to your FAFSA without contacting the Office of Financial Aid first.

Ways of Verifying Income

1. Give consent within the FAFSA for Augustana to receive your tax information.
2. Send the applicable 1040 Tax Form as instructed on the corresponding verification form. 
3. Request a Tax Return Transcript

  • Available on the IRS Web site
  • Choose option to GET TRANSCRIPT Online or by Mail
  • Enter the primary tax filer’s information. Use the address currently on file with the IRS. Generally this will be the address that was listed on the latest tax return filed.
  • Click "Continue"
  • In the "Type of Transcript" field, select “Return Transcript” and indicated the year needed in the "Tax Year" field.
  • If successfully validated, the web page will indicate a timeframe in which tax filers can expect to receive a paper IRS Tax Return Transcript.

Verifying Identity

To verify your identity you can either appear in person with a government issued photo ID and complete the Identity Verification Form or have a notary sign the form and then forward the form to our office.
