FAFSA Verification

FAFSA Verification is a process that helps confirm the accuracy of the data you reported on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Once applications are chosen through the FAFSA process, Augustana is required to request additional information about certain items. These verified items can include income, family size, citizenship and dependency status. The Department of Education also requires schools to verify any conflicting information that comes up in the review of a student's financial aid file. Your information may be verified before and/or after you receive a financial aid offer.

Below is some additional information you should know if your FAFSA is chosen for verification.

Verifying Income Information

There are two options to verify your income:

1. IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT)

Go to studentaid.gov/FAFSA
Log into using your (the student's) FSA ID
Select “Make FAFSA Corrections”
Click on the Financial Information tab
Follow instructions to determine if eligible to use the IRS DRT (If not able to use the IRS DRT complete Option 2)

2. Request Tax Return Transcript

Available on the IRS Web site
Choose Option to GET TRANSCRIPT Online or by Mail
Enter the primary tax filer’s information. Use the address currently on file with the IRS. Generally this will be the address that was listed on the latest tax return filed.
Click Continue
In the Type of Transcript field, select “Return Transcript” and indicated the year needed in the Tax Year field.
If successfully validated, the web page will indicate a timeframe which tax filers can expect to receive a paper IRS Tax Return Transcript.
