Augustana University has been awarded a three-year $187,063 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support Dr. Andrew Klose, assistant professor of physical chemistry, and student researchers to carry out experimental nuclear science research.
The research will be conducted at Augustana, as well as the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) and Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University. Laser spectroscopy will be performed on radioactive isotopes that are produced at NSCL/FRIB to elucidate systematic changes in the shape and size of nuclides with extreme proton-to-neutron ratios. Such information provides vital input into nuclear theories that are used to understand the fundamental forces that bind nuclei together at the edges of stability.
Klose won the grant for his project titled, RUI: Laser Probing of Proton-Rich Rare Isotopes. Augustana has several other faculty who are currently supported by NSF grants including professors Eric Wells, Nathan Grau, and Drew Alton.

The skills students will gain carrying out their research are important for the STEM workforce, which is, in turn, a key component of a prosperous and innovative economy.”
Research activities will be conducted at Augustana during the academic year, and travel to Michigan State University will occur during the summer. Additionally, support will be provided to disseminate the research outcomes at regional and national conferences. Finally, the grant will provide funding to purchase new instrumentation that will be used both at Augustana and MSU.
