Biography
Beginning in Fall 2025, Dr. Boyd Perkins will serve as the interim director of the Viking Marching Band and director of music education at Augustana University. Prior to his appointment at Augustana, he held key leadership positions, including coordinator of fine arts for the Sioux Falls School District (SFSD) and director of bands and chair of the music and theater departments at Northern State University (NSU).
Perkins holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Arts in conducting with a music education cognate from the University of Iowa, Master of Organizational Leadership from Northwestern University – St. Paul, Minnesota, and Bachelor of Science in music education with both instrumental and vocal emphases from South Dakota State University (SDSU). He also holds certification in distance education through the Online Learning Consortium.
With extensive teaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels in Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota, Perkins is recognized for his expertise in concert band, marching band and low brass instruction. He maintains an active schedule as an adjudicator and clinician in all three areas. A 6-year member and corps commander of the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps from Casper, Wyoming, he brings a wealth of practical and performance-based knowledge to his teaching.
In the field of marching band, Perkins is known for his dynamic leadership at all academic levels. His collegiate bands have twice performed in presidential inaugural parades and were selected to perform twice in Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade, honoring World War II veterans. In that time-frame he also led a successful 4-city concert tour of China with his symphonic band and was named South Dakota “Bandmaster of the Year” by Phi Beta Mu in 2013.
Perkins’ research on the personal documents of Edwin Franko Goldman has been published in the Journal of Band Research, reflecting his commitment to scholarship and the advancement of band literature.
