Biography 
Daniel Steinwand serves as assistant professor of computer & data science and also currently serves as department chair. He began teaching at Augustana in February 2012 as an adjunct professor and joined the department full-time in 2017. He led the creation of the data science program which began in 2018. His areas of expertise include software engineering, machine learning, data engineering & visualization and computer architecture & operating systems. Prior to joining Augustana, Steinwand served as director of data science & clinical intelligence at Avera Health for three years, and in various roles at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center as a government computer scientist and as a satellite systems engineer with contractors SAIC, Raytheon, Hughes and Technicolor. In his 31 years at EROS, he developed expertise in satellite image processing and worked primarily with the Landsat series of satellites. He has published papers and manuals on algorithms for the geometric correction of space-borne imagery, map projection transformations, data engineering of science-ready image products and parallel processing for image-based numerical algorithms. Steinwand earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from South Dakota State University and Bachelor of Arts in computer science from Augustana.
