Biography

Dr. Emily Gislason earned a Ph.D. in developmental psychology, with dissertation research exploring how early attachment disruptions can shape the developmental experience of motherhood.

As a clinician, educator and supervisor, Gislason is committed to helping both children and emerging professionals grow. As a licensed mental health therapist, she specializes in evidence-based play therapy interventions and works extensively with children affected by trauma, anxiety, high-conflict family dynamics and the unique experiences of military-connected families.

At Augustana University, Gislason teaches courses within its Play Therapy Certificate Program. Her courses invite students to build a strong foundation in child development while exploring the theoretical underpinnings of play therapy and the practical interventions that foster meaningful growth and change. She strives to create an engaging learning environment that helps students connect theory, research and real-world clinical practice.

Outside of her professional roles, Gislason enjoys spending time with her family and pets, crafting, gardening and searching antique stores for unexpected treasures.
