Biography 

Dr. Joel Johnson received his Ph.D. from Harvard University, where he served as a lecturer on government. He taught courses in political philosophy, American political thought, politics and literature and Asian politics, in addition to advising the department's honors program. In 2010-11, Johnson was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in American studies at the University of Marburg in Germany. From 2013 to 2016, he was appointed Augustana's Stanley L. Olsen Chair of Moral Values. The primary focus of his research is 18th and 19th-century American political thought. He is the author of Beyond Practical Virtue: A Defense of Liberal Democracy through Literature (University of Missouri Press, 2007), in addition to numerous articles and book chapters.
