Biography
Dr. Marcus Birkenkrahe is a computer scientist whose career spans theoretical physics, corporate knowledge management and higher education. He began his research career in lattice gauge theory and neural network methods at the University of Hamburg, earning his Dr. rer. nat. (Ph.D.) in Physics. He went on to hold knowledge management and strategy roles at Accenture and Shell International in London, England, before becoming professor of business information systems at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. Most recently, he served as associate professor of computer and data science at Lyon College. His current research spans literate programming and reproducible data science, physics-informed machine learning and the role of generative AI in research and education. He has authored more than 60 publications and given 60+ conference talks and keynotes on these topics, and he continues to serve on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Data Science, International Journal of Big Data Management and International Journal of Learning and Change.
