Our program positions teachers certified in South Dakota to add an endorsement in Special Education (K-12). Teacher licensure requirements vary by state. Graduates of our program may be eligible to pursue certification in other states but may need to take additional coursework or licensure tests to be fully credentialed in other states. They may also be able to pursue certification in Special Education via alternative certification routes in other states.

Many states in the U.S. currently have licensure rules for Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), and more states are in the process of implementing rules.

Although graduates of the Augustana M.Ed. SPED ABA Program will meet eligibility requirements for the BCBA examination, board certification will not necessarily lead to immediate licensure in many states. Augustana is committed to helping each student accrue fieldwork hours that meet their state licensure rules in addition to the BCBA field experience requirements. However, students in the AU M.Ed. SPED ABA Program are ultimately responsible for being informed on and meeting their state licensure rules, as applicable, prior to practicing as a BCBA.

Graduates from Augustana University with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in accounting and Master of Professional Accountancy degree have met the requirements for CPA exam eligibility in South Dakota. CPA exam eligibility requirements for other states vary. States may change their CPA exam eligibility requirements at any time. State Board of Accountancy websites are the best resource for updated information. Augustana students are ultimately responsible for being informed of and meeting their state CPA exam eligibility requirements. In addition to passing the national CPA exam, all states impose an experience requirement that must be met before full licensure can be achieved.

Genetic counseling certification is regulated nationally by the American Board of Genetic Counseling, Inc. (ABGC). In order to become a Board Certified Genetic Counselor, an applicant must have a master’s degree in genetic counseling from a program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling, Inc. (ACGC). Augustana University’s M.S. in Genetic Counseling Program is accredited by the ACGC and thereby meets the academic requirements that graduates need for national certification as genetic counselors. Many states also regulate the genetic counseling profession at the state level. Every state where licensure is required uses ABGC certification in place of a licensure exam. Other requirements may include, but are not limited to, application and licensing fees, criminal background checks or reference checks. It is important for students and new genetic counselors to be aware of all such requirements and plan accordingly. The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) maintains the most up-to-date list of states requiring genetic counseling licensure on their website.

As an ACGC-accredited program, the Augustana University Master of Science in Genetic Counseling Program satisfies all requirements for students to sit for the ABGC certification exam. A passing score on this exam allows students to be eligible for licensure in all U.S. states that currently offer licensure.

Graduates from Augustana's sign language interpreting program who successfully complete the requirements for National Interpreter Certification are eligible for licensure in South Dakota. State requirements for licensure in other states vary. The Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf has created a resource to assist in understanding varied state requirements; however, it is meant as a resource not as a final authority on the licensure requirements for each state.
