Women's Club Rugby at AU

Augustana Women’s Club Rugby is affiliated with the Small College Division of the National Collegiate Rugby League. Augustana's club is part of the Prairie States Women’s Collegiate Rugby Conference (WCRC), along with the University of South Dakota (USD), South Dakota State University (SDSU), University of Minnesota Morris (UMN-Morris) and Wayne State College.

Augustana Women’s Club Rugby is interested in recruiting players of all types and athletic abilities. The club introduces its players to the physicality of the sport, which begins with soft falls and tackles to ensure comfort on the field — recent training camps have offered the club an opportunity to practice basic skills and drills, as well as run through game scenarios.

History of AU Women's Club Rugby

Women's Club Rugby was founded in 2009 by Augustana student Krista Froke, who had previously played rugby at another college and fell in love with the sport. When she transferred to Augustana, she wanted to share this thrilling experience with other women and decided to start a club at Augustana. She teamed up with another student, Hannah Fie, who played when she was in high school. With hard work and dedication, the two were able to find a sponsor for the team and build a roster consisting of 18 players within its first year of existance. The club continued to be run by players for a few years. In 2013, Bryn Chivers took the team under his wing and coached Augustana until 2015. When Chivers transitioned to coaching another team, Augustana returned to being run solely by its players. In the fall of 2021, Annie Dally, former USD player and coach, took on the head coaching position with her last season in Spring 2023. Mikayla Schroeder, a former USD player, has now stepped into the role of head coach.

Note: Games are Saturdays, typically between 10 a.m., and 3 p.m., with exact times TBD the week of the game. Updates will be posted on the Augustana Rugby Club's Instagram. Game days typically consist of 2-4 games, depending on the type of game being played and how many people and teams are in attendance. Rugby can be played with 7, 10 or 15 players on the field per team. There are two halves to each game with the length of the half depending on the type of game being played (7s - 7 minute halves, 10s - 10 minute halves, 15s -15 minute halves).

Practices

Tuesdays & Thursdays, from 6-7:30 p.m. on Augustana Football Practice Field (Lake Avenue between 33rd & 37th Street — south of Ronken Field and west of Bowden Field)
