Who are Journey Scholars?

If you identify as a student of color, attended high school in the United States and have been accepted to Augustana University, you are encouraged to join.

Journey Scholars are students who have a strong desire and determination to be successful, are interested in engaging with their peers and the campus community, and are willing to help Augustana continue to shape a campus community that welcomes, supports and affirms all students.

What are the program's goals?

Through the Journey Scholars program you will:

  • connect with an Augustana peer mentor of color for regular one-on-one meetings.
  • develop and implement a personalized academic plan.
  • apply skills that empower you to take responsibility for your educational experience through ongoing academic and career coaching.
  • engage with other change-makers within the Journey Scholars Program, University and larger Sioux Falls community.
  • attend social and educational events throughout the academic year.
What is the time commitment?

The Journey Scholars Program begins with an orientation that occurs prior to the start of the Augustana move-in. Early connection allows you to start connecting with peer mentors and other Journey Scholars before the school year begins.

Programming will continue throughout your first year, with opportunities for connecting and gathering with the Journey Scholars group every few weeks.

How and when should I apply?

To be considered for the program, you must complete a brief, two-question application. Once received, your application will be reviewed by the Journey Scholars Committee.

You are encouraged to complete the Journey Scholars application as soon as you have been admitted to the university. Students will be notified of their admission to the program beginning in November, with notification being sent on a rolling basis thereafter.

Scholarship opportunities for participants and space within the program is limited so it is best to apply prior to February 1. The application for Fall of 2021 is closed, but the Fall 2022 application will open on August 1.
