With the addition of the $70 million Midco Arena, Augustana Athletics is launched the first collegiate hockey program in South Dakota in 2023 and is also the first athletics program to compete at Division I that calls Sioux Falls home. Currently with 21 NCAA Division II sports programs, Augustana Athletics is focused on building champions in the classroom, in competition and in the community, highlighted by three team national championships since 2016. Viking Athletics finished #7 nationally in the Division II Learfield Director’s Cup in 2021-22 and also won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) All Sports Award.
Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach
Augustana University invites applications for the position of Assistant Coach – Men’s Basketball. This 12-month position supports all aspects of coaching the NCAA Division II men’s basketball program, including recruitment, game preparation, player evaluation, academic coordination, and practice/game coaching. The role involves fostering a positive training environment, promoting team building, accountability, and the well-being of student-athletes. Additional duties include assisting the head coach with day-to-day operations and managing the team, including coaching defense/offense and recruiting student-athletes.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Design and implement practice plans, drills, and individual workouts focused on skill development, conditioning, and tactical instruction.
- Provide detailed technical and tactical coaching during practices and games.
- Assist with in-game decision-making, including substitution patterns, play-calling, and timeout management.
- Mentor student-athletes on athletic and personal development, emphasizing character, accountability, and leadership.
- Coordinate position-specific training and development plans (e.g., guards, forwards, post players)
- Identify, evaluate, and recruit prospective student-athletes who meet the program’s athletic and academic standards.
- Develop and maintain the recruiting database and schedule official/unofficial campus visits.
- Assist with scholarship recommendations and talent evaluation.
- Monitor academic progress and eligibility of student-athletes in coordination with academic services and compliance staff.
- Ensure program compliance with all institutional, conference, and national governing body rules and regulations.
- Complete required compliance documentation and recruiting logs accurately and on time.
- Analyze opponent game film and prepare detailed scouting reports utilizing software platforms such as Hudl, Synergy, or SportsCode for video breakdown and analytics.
- Collaborate with the Head Coach to develop game strategies and adjustments based on opponent tendencies.
- Assist with planning and execution of team travel, including transportation, lodging, meals, and itineraries.
- Assist with coordinating team scheduling, including games, practices, meetings, and study halls.
- Manage inventory and maintenance of equipment and uniforms.
- Assist with budgeting and expense tracking related to recruiting, travel, and operations.
- Oversee student managers and support staff as delegated.
- Represent the basketball program in campus, community, and alumni events.
- Participate in fundraising initiatives, camps, and clinics to support program development.
- Serve as a positive ambassador for the institution and athletics department at public and private events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- At least 2-3 years of coaching experience at the collegiate, high school, or club level.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basketball strategy, skill development, and recruiting.
- Strong leadership, organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proven ability to work effectively with diverse student-athletes, staff, and stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Prior experience at the collegiate level and recruitment experience.
- Familiarity with recruiting databases (e.g. ARMS/Teamworks)
- Experience with video and statistical analysis software (e.g., Hudl, Synergy)
- CPR/AED Certified.
