Viking Marching Band

The Heartbeat of AU

The Augustana University Viking Marching Band (VMB) is the sound of Viking Football and the heartbeat of K.O. Stadium. The marching band presents pregame and halftime shows at all home football games each season. As one of the most visible ensembles in the School of Music (SoM), and one of the largest student organizations on campus, the band brings all Vikings together to cheer for AU. Comprised of students from nearly every major, this time-honored organization combines quality musicianship, Viking spirit, pride and dedication to create renowned grid-iron excitement. Students participating in the marching band are offered an annual scholarship.

How to Join

The VMB consists of brass, woodwinds and percussion instrumentalists who love music and want to continue performing at the university level. The School of Music (SoM) invites all AU students to join regardless of prior experience.

Students interested in joining should:

  • Fill out the VMB Interest Form
  • Review the FAQs and Band Camp Information — Students are required to attend the VMB preseason band camp. Camp occurs one week prior to the normal move-in weekend. It is a chance for students to learn music and marching before classes begin.
  • Percussionists — Current students who intend to play mallet or battery percussion will audition in the spring. Incoming students who intend to play mallet or battery percussion can audition in the spring or during camp.
  • Woodwind/Brass Musicians — There are no formal auditions for woodwind and brass musicians, however, students must submit a part-assignment video by Aug. 15, which will be posted by move-in.
