Position Title: Career & Academic Planning (CAP) Specialist and Academic Support Coordinator

The CAP Specialist and Academic Support Coordinator is responsible for providing comprehensive support for students enrolled in the diverse academic programs in the Natural Sciences.

Job Duties:

  • Source talent for organizations and provide names of interested individuals who plan to apply for positions advertised by AU.
  • Meet individually with students and host diverse events to foster career readiness and engagement.
  • Educate students on job and internship search strategies, including resume writing, interviewing, and networking.
  • Launch appointment campaigns and connect with students eligible for experiential learning.
  • Teach two sections of FYS 112 and host core value events for FYS 110.
  • Follow-up with graduates to track their destinations for the annual career outcomes report.
  • Maintain confidential records of academic performance and student interventions.
  • Manage multiple priorities, enter case notes into Navigate Retention Software, and maintain appointment schedule.
  • Author online educational materials, maintain Major Maps, and plan tailored programming to advance the success of students.
  • Pre-register incoming freshmen prior to New Student Registration. Develop and individually discuss class schedules with new students who are unable to visit campus during the summer.
  • Follow up with individuals not yet registered and support students in academic distress. Update faculty within two business days of receiving a request and close cases within no more than seven business days.
  • Conduct exit interviews of students who withdraw from the institution.
  • Host academic planner lab to prepare first-year students to meet with their academic advisors.
  • Promote success resources, cover the front desk as needed, collect internship forms from students, and complete other duties as assigned.
  • Work at least one night per week.

Qualifications:

  • The selected candidate will possess a Master's degree, which qualifies them to instruct courses and satisfy accreditation requirements, as well as demonstrate a desire to work in a private, church-related environment.
  • Outstanding helping skills and cultural awareness with an ability to navigate diverse students’ needs.
  • Familiarity with emerging student success theories, best practices, exemplary models, and current trends.
  • Excellent written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with technology, especially Microsoft Office, application tracking systems, social media job search platforms, and retention software.
  • Demonstrated ability to market events, work in a team, and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Self-starter with a commitment to detailed record-keeping and documentation.

Position Title: Director of Residence Life

The Director of Residence Life sets the tone for the implementation of a residential community that supports the wellbeing and success of each student living in Augustana University’s Residence Life program.

Job Duties:

  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and coaches a diverse staff of professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Ensures adherence to Human Resource policies and procedures and works to resolves employee concerns
  • Regularly communicates with a variety of constituents such as campus partners, stakeholders, students, parents, and board members.
  • Provides oversight for the effective implementation of a 24-hour response system for student concerns, facility emergencies, and crises management protocols.
  • Ensures that all reports and compliance material are prepared in a timely manner.
  • Directs policy and procedure development for the department and assists with university-wide policy development.
  • Responsible for training staff in all aspects of university policy that affect their jobs as well as ensuring students are aware of residence life policies and the student code of conduct.
  • Creates a strategic plan and mission for the department that reflects the Viking Bold Strategic Plan and the Campus Master Plan.
  • Participates in campus wide committees and initiatives such as new student registration, High Impact Practices opportunities, and summer programs.
  • Establishes, maintains and supports a positive, healthy, living/learning environment in the University residence halls consistent with the goals and expectations of the Division of Student Affairs and the Viking Bold Strategic Plan.
  • Responsible for the development of programs and services that support student engagement, sense of belonging, well-being, and success. Helps staff make connections between the academic and cocurricular experience and to think creatively about how to implement programs that encourage that synergy.
  • Supports and implements the Residence Life Programming Model and looks for opportunities to incorporate experiential learning and other HIPs. Ensures that residence life staff plan, coordinate, and implement programs that supports all aspects of the model.
  • Works with the Director of Conduct to ensure consistency, fairness, and policy adherence when dealing with conduct issues. Supports staff as they hear low level conduct hearings. Makes referrals for higher level cases.
  • Directs the consistent assessment of programs, services, and activities of the department to identify needs, measure outcomes and improve service while maintaining a focus on continuous quality improvement, retention, and student success.
  • Provide departmental leadership for facility management of residence halls, housing facilities and apartments including master facility planning, yearly renovations, and repair initiatives
  • Assists in maintaining the residence hall facilities/campus apartments and works closely with housekeeping and maintenance staff to assure facilities that support a student’s sense of belonging, engagement, and success.
  • Serves as a key leader in the renovation and development of spaces impacting the residential student experience.
  • Works collaboratively with campus partners as the University accommodates larger classes of incoming students.
  • Responsible for pre-campus communication with incoming students as well as returning students, housing selection and assignments.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of social media and website for the department.
  • Oversees marketing efforts for residence life, including all publications both in print and electronic, understanding that the department markets not only to perspective students but to current students as well.
  • While Augustana University does not operate residence life as an auxiliary, it is expected that the Director will successfully manage significant student auxiliary operations.
  • Develops annual occupancy and revenue projections in keeping with long-range goals and aligned with the Viking Bold strategic priorities
  • Ensures the development of fiscally sound operating budgets, including revenue projections, and expenditure plans based on occupancy.
  • Stimulates growth in revenue through marketing, addition of new services, and increasing the number of students who return to campus after their first year.
  • Work closely with Summer Programs and other campus partners to market the halls to potential clients to increase revenues through summer conference activities
  • Responsible for emergency response/crisis management in partnership with the Associate Dean of Students.
  • Coordinates and holds staff accountable for the “on call” rotation. Provides training to colleagues in the Director on Call rotation and maintains support materials to assist them in their role.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree.
  • 7 or more years of progressive experience in a comprehensive university residence life program. Must include supervision of professional staff.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in the administration of a complex university residence life program.
  • Facility management and master planning.
  • Budgeting, forecasting and occupancy management.
  • Ability to recruit, hire, train, coach and develop staff.
  • Understanding the value of student engagement and student development theory. Demonstrated success in implementing programs that support this.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships across campus that enhance student engagement and success

Position Title: Instructional Designer

Position Type: Full-Time

Department: Graduate Education

The Graduate Education Office at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD, invites applicants for a full-time Instructional Designer position beginning August 2022. The classification for this 12-month position is Administrator with Faculty Status. Salary and rank commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities: The Instructional Designer will primarily collaborate with content experts to design, develop, evaluate, and revise instructional content, courses and curriculum for predominantly online and hybrid courses that are part of degree and certificate offerings. While the position reports to the Director of Graduate and Continuing Education, the Instructional Designer would also be expected to collaborate with others in IT and from the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning to provide faculty development. This person will also be required to manage and track progress on multiple design projects and keep projects within budget, resource, and time parameters. The person may have opportunities to teach, depending on institutional priorities and need as well as individual interest and/or expertise.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in instructional design, and significant online teaching experience in higher education. Evidence of collaborating with others to develop effective hybrid and online learning courses or programs that meet industry and/or accreditation standards. Candidate must have knowledge of learning management systems and emerging tools as related to teaching and learning.  Exceptional oral and written communication skills are essential.

A combination of a master's or doctoral degree in a closely related field; Instructional Designer certification from a reputable, industry-accepted organization with a recognized high-quality program, such as Online Learning Consortium, Quality Matters, etc., AND significant online teaching experience in higher education. Position Title: Outdoor Program Graduate Assistant

Position Type: Part-Time

Department: Recreational Services

Augustana University invites applications for the position of Outdoor Program Graduate Assistant in the Recreational Services department.

The Outdoor Program Graduate Assistant has responsibility for assisting the Director of Recreational Services in managing the recreational opportunities for the entire campus and in managing the recreational facility.  Primary responsibility is managing the Outdoor Recreation Program, and contributing strong leadership in the areas of staff training and development for the Outdoor Recreation program.

The duties, competencies, and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Effectively manage and coordinate the Outdoor Recreation program:
      • Organize and direct the outdoor recreation program for the Augustana community as well as the potential to develop and coordinate community-facing programs.
      • Further develop the outdoor recreation program goals and priorities.
      • Train and supervise outdoor recreation program participants.
      • Coordinate scheduling and logistics of outdoor recreation program activities.
      • Maintain accurate participation records.
      • Effectively manage the outdoor recreation program budget and maintain accurate budget records.
      • Effectively market/promote the outdoor recreation program to the Augustana community.
      • Purchase equipment and sign off on any program expenditures.
      • Maintain an accurate equipment inventory.
  • Play a leadership role in the selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of staff in the recreational services department. Focusing primarily on:
    • Outdoor program student leadership
    • Weight room student supervisors
    • Assist in the staff development, leadership training, daily supervision, and conflict resolution skills training with other recreational services staff as needed.
  • Leading student staff toward growth and ongoing success in the department mission of Attracting People and Building leaders.
  • Developing servant heart leaders who serve with enthusiastic attitudes and create Wow experiences for the campus and Sioux Falls community.
  • Assist with other aspects of the Recreational Services programs and facility management as needed.

Qualifications for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Health, Physical Education, Outdoor Recreation, or related field
  • Certification in American Red Cross 1st Aid, CPR, AED
  • Related Wilderness first Aid certification
  • Climbing experience and related certifications

Position Title: Residence Hall Director

Position Type: Full Time

Department: Student Affairs, Residence Life

Residence Hall Directors serve as members of the Residence Life team within the division of Student Affairs, providing leadership and support to a dedicated, creative, and dynamic staff with responsibility for leading a comprehensive student life program. Residence Hall Directors provide ongoing support and supervision to students and staff; participate in social and educational program development; support the University’s mission, vision, and core values; and collaborate with other departments and divisions to provide excellent service.

Residence Hall Director positions are 12-month, full-time, live-in positions within the Residence Life department.

Supervision

Residence Hall Directors report to the Associate Dean of Students & Title IX Coordinator.

Responsibilities

Residence Hall Directors will be responsible for the supervision of one residence hall, for

staffing and programmatic needs. Residence halls house 250 to 450 students, depending on location and provide opportunities to work with students in themed communities specific to service, vocation and faith, flexible housing, and first-year students.

Supervision

  • Directly supervise a staff of 6-10 undergraduate students. 

Residence Hall Administration and Management

  • Manage one co-ed residence hall of 50 to 250 students each.
  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate student staff.
  • Facilitate building management, to include administration of check-in and checkout processes, communication of facility needs, room changes, roommate mediation, and key administration.
  • Provide direction to student staff in the development and implementation of programming designed to foster academic success, career exploration, wellness, diversity, community service, community building and development, and leadership development.
  • Be visible and available to students and staff.
  • Work with Director of Student Conduct for incidents that occur in university housing facilities.
  • Oversee programming and manage budget.
    • Maintain office hours for residence hall.
  • Serve as a source of support and intervention for students experiencing personal and interpersonal difficulties.

Crisis Management

  • Serve as on-scene response for the larger Residential Education program on-call rotation.
  • Assess student needs and make referrals to appropriate offices and services.

Collateral Assignment:

  • Collaterals will be assigned based on experience and specific needs for the academic year
  • Examples include: 
    • Early Alert (EARS) case management.
    • Training/selection/recruitment of student staff. 
    • Residential education and programming model
    • Mental health programming and support
    • Housing - apartment & theme house communities

Departmental Support

  • Assist and support Residence Life staff in achieving the goals of the department.
  • Represent Residence Life & Student Affairs at university functions, programs, activities, and events.
  • Serve as a member of University committees as assigned.
  • Collaborate on the development of department-wide assessment plans.
  • Manage summer projects, such as summer housing, camps, and conferences.
  • Availability for some additional evening, weekend, and holiday needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Master’s degree preferred. Successful candidates will possess a theoretical and practical knowledge of student development, its application within a residential environment, and a demonstrated ability to encourage and support diversity and inclusion.

The successful candidate will also possess the following:

  • Ability to articulate the value of a residential experience to students, staff, faculty, and parents.
  • Ability to create conditions that are accepting of differences regardless of gender, race, religion, abilities, class, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and political affiliation.
  • Experience with crisis intervention and conflict management.
  • Practical knowledge of program evaluation and assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Ability to effectively communicate using oral, written, and electronic communication.
  • Other duties as assigned.
