Augustana University invites applications for the position of Director of the De & Dave Knudson Center for Global Engagement. The Director serves as Augustana’s Senior International Officer (SIO), leading a comprehensive strategy for global engagement through study abroad, international student services, customized programming, international partnerships, and global learning integration.
The Director fosters meaningful international experiences for students and faculty while overseeing compliance, risk management, and outreach efforts as well as collaborating on international student recruitment. This position plays a vital role in the university’s commitment to preparing graduates for an interconnected world, aligned with Augustana’s core values of Christian faith, liberal arts, excellence, community, and service.
Key Responsibilities:
The Director provides strategic and operational leadership for Augustana University’s international efforts. As the Senior International Officer and Primary Designated School Official (PDSO), the Director oversees a professional team engaged in international student services and advising, study abroad programming, and customized programs. The Director also works closely with campus colleagues on global recruitment. This role is central to advancing a cohesive global engagement strategy aligned with the university’s mission.
The Director collaborates with senior leadership to promote internationalization across academic and co-curricular programs, cultivating partnerships with foreign universities, recruitment agencies, and third-party providers to expand educational access and support international student enrollment. The position ensures compliance with immigration regulations and manages risk and policy development related to international travel and programming.
Working closely with faculty and staff, the Director develops and oversees study abroad offerings, including faculty-led and semester programs. The Director partners with key administrative units—including Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Life, and Advancement—to provide holistic support for globally engaged students and maintain the effectiveness of international operations. The Director also manages the CGE board.
The Director also represents Augustana at national and international conferences, and collaborates with Advancement to engage alumni and donors in support of international initiatives. Through visionary leadership and cross-campus collaboration, the Director ensures Augustana’s global programming is robust, accessible, and mission-driven.
Qualifications & Skills:
Required:
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (to serve as PDSO).
- Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Valid driver’s license and passport.
- Minimum of five years of progressive experience in international education.
- Demonstrated intercultural competence and global awareness.
- Experience supervising professional staff and managing complex projects.
- Knowledge of immigration regulations, SEVIS, and best practices in risk management and study abroad.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred:
- 10 years of experience directing or coordinating international programs.
- Fluency in a second language.
- Experience in higher education administration, recruitment, and fundraising.
- Proficiency in software systems including Via-TRM, Slate, SEVIS, Jenzabar, Reeher, and Microsoft Office/Google Suite.
- Experience with grant writing and external advisory boards.
- Active participation in international education associations (e.g., NAFSA, AIEA, Forum on Education Abroad).
