Biography

Dr. Jennifaye V. Brown has a B.A. in psychology from Emory University, an M.S. in physical therapy from the University of Miami, Florida, and a Ph.D. in exercise science from the University of South Carolina. Brown has 33 years of clinical experience focused in neurorehabilitation across the continuum of care and has presented numerous continuing education courses on adult neurologic assessment and treatment intervention for acquired brain injury, particularly stroke. Brown’s special clinical interests and focus as a practitioner include gait analysis & training, AFO fabrication & modifications and evaluation of home, leisure and workspaces to make recommendations for full accessibility allowing aging in place. Her approach to effective gait analysis and treatment is to know the lesion site, understand neuroanatomical functions, consider social determinants of health and devise a realistic plan of care that is reflective of the person and caregiver’s goals and lived experiences. She thrives in the classroom and clinic when given the opportunity to teach clinical neurorehabilitation.

Brown’s current research agenda explores the perceptions and opinions of individuals with stroke regarding their experiences with AFO fabrication, modification and maintenance and the presence of diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging concepts in learning outcomes, learning experiences and assessment. Her clinical goal is to partner with healthcare professionals to fabricate AFOs (specializing in accommodating ladies’ footwear), utilizing scanning technology, computer aided design and 3D printing based on a full spectrum gait-related physical therapy examination. Brown is a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). As an advanced credentialed clinical instructor by the Clinical Instructor Education Board and a three 10-year term board certified neurologic clinical specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Brown has taught at PT and PTA programs in Georgia, Ohio and South Carolina. She is a member of the American Academy of Physical Therapy (AAPT), Aerobics & Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association (NDTA). She is also a 2020 graduate of the prestigious APTA Fellowship in education leadership.

In her free time, Brown recently started teaching aqua fitness classes but engages daily in her favorite pastime of sunshine walks for health and fitness. She enjoys all things related to being debt free which includes generational and legacy wealth building and hopes to impart her knowledge and habits to graduates of Augustana's DPT program.
